This is a la orignale, my first ever Waste Paper Basket. This basket would be pushing over 10 years old now. It was made as part of my final year assessment in textiles. It was exhibited as part of REclaimed, a show at Project Contemporary Art Space in Wollongong during 2001.
I have carried this basket with me to and from every house I’ve ever lived in. It has been packed, repacked, unpacked too many times to count. Amazingly it has survived all the different cities, countries and experiences along the way. Let’s just say the rest of the series wasn’t so lucky…
Today it sits proud on my bookshelf as a reminder of where it all began. It inspires me to keep growing, keep creating and keep moving forward. It’s also a good reminder for me on how not to coil a basket. Thank god my technique has improved since then!
